The Hill Youth Action Team was created by YDTRC as a result of community forums and a neighborhood initiative starting in 2005 with a Hill forum sponsored by the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. Youth issues were a top priority area voiced by the 68 forum participants, including 20 youth who attended the community sessions. YDTRC collaborators include Youth @ Work, Perrin Family Foundation,  City of New Haven, Mayor’s Arts Grants, New Alliance Foundation, and others.

The Hill Youth Action Team is a group of high school students that works to improve the Hill neighborhood in New Haven, CT. HYAT is a 5-week summer youth employment opportunity and weekly afterschool program at Wilson Library. HYAT members develop their communication skills, and practice leadership through project activities planned and led by HYAT members to help others in the Hill. The goal is to make the Hill neighborhood a safer place. Since 2006 YDTRC has secured resources to support HYAT leaders.

HYAT members have worked hard to:

  • Provide skills and employment for teens in the Hill
  • Identify opportunities and resource for youth and families in the Hill
  • Be role models for younger children and teens
  • Increase positive partnerships that can lead to new opportunities
